Don’t let a known killer of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders participate in your event!

Tobacco is the #1 preventable cause of disease, disability, and death among Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) and is associated with the top three killers of AANHPIs – heart disease, cancer, and stroke.

Cambodian men face a 39% rate of tobacco use, while 48% of Laotian men and 51% of Vietnamese men use tobacco. Korean American males studied in California had the highest smoking-attributable cancer burden of any of the Asian and Pacific Islander American groups studied, with 71% of their cancer death rate linked to tobacco smoke exposure.

Tobacco, and the death and disease that comes with it,  have no place in our communities. It’s time to make that clear by excluding tobacco from our community events.

Asian Pacific Partners for Empowerment, Advocacy, and Leadership has two decades of experience fighting to protect AANHPI communities from the devastating impacts of tobacco through culturally tailored strategies aimed at educating and empowering community leaders to change the policies and systems that continue to allow tobacco to kill.

You can join the fight to save your community by choosing to have your event certified as tobacco free.

What does “tobacco-free” mean?

No tobacco use in any area of the event.

No funding from the tobacco industry.

No displays, handouts, or samples promoting tobacco use.

The Benefits of a Certified Tobacco-Free Event

In acknowledgement of your commitment to protecting your community, APPEAL and the members of the RAISE Network will help promote your event through our partner lists, social media, and by featuring your event and organization as a “Tobacco-Free Community Champion.”

In addition, APPEAL will provide a “Certified Tobacco-Free” graphic to show the value you place on protecting the health of your community, along with informational materials about the dangers of tobacco and promotional Certified Tobacco-Free Air Fresheners to hand out at your event.

Your participation in this tobacco-free event campaign will clearly show your organization’s commitment to keeping your community healthy and it will help to raise the visibility of the disproportionate and devastating impacts many AANHPI communities continue to face from tobacco.
